How to Install WINE on a VPS Running AlmaLinux 9  Imprimir este artículo

WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is a compatibility layer that allows you to run Windows applications on Unix-like operating systems, including AlmaLinux. If you have a VPS (Virtual Private Server) running AlmaLinux 9 and want to install WINE, follow this step-by-step guide.

Prerequisites

  1. VPS with AlmaLinux 9 Installed: Ensure your server is running AlmaLinux 9. You can connect to your VPS via SSH.
  2. Sudo Access: You should have a user with sudo privileges.

Step 1: Update Your System

Before installing any packages, it’s a good practice to update your system to ensure you have the latest packages and security patches.

sudo dnf update -y

Step 2: Enable the EPEL Repository

WINE is not available in the default AlmaLinux repositories, so you need to enable the Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) repository.

sudo dnf install epel-release -y

Step 3: Enable the EPEL Modular Repository

AlmaLinux may require the EPEL modular repository to be enabled as well:

sudo dnf module enable epel -y

Step 4: Add the WINE Repository

To install WINE, you will need to add the WINE repository. You can do this by creating a new wine.repo file in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory:

sudo nano /etc/yum.repos.d/wine.repo

Add the following content to the file:

[winehq]
name=WINEHQ
baseurl=https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/epel/9/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1
repo_gpgcheck=1
enabled=1
gpgkey=https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key

Step 5: Install WINE

After adding the repository, you can now install WINE. You have the option to install different versions of WINE. The standard options are winehq-stable, winehq-devel, and winehq-staging.

For the stable version, run:

sudo dnf install winehq-stable -y

For the development or staging version, you can replace winehq-stable with winehq-devel or winehq-staging.

Step 6: Verify the Installation

Once the installation is complete, verify that WINE is successfully installed by checking the version:

wine --version

You should see output similar to:

wine-8.x.x

Step 7: Configure WINE

Before you run Windows applications, you might want to configure WINE. You can initialize the WINE configuration by running:

winecfg

This command creates the WINE directory in your home folder (usually ~/.wine) and opens the WINE configuration window, allowing you to adjust various settings.

Step 8: Install Windows Applications

You can now install and run Windows applications using WINE. To install an application, navigate to the directory containing the executable (.exe) file and run the command:

wine your_application.exe

Replace your_application.exe with the name of the executable file you want to run.
