How to Install LAMP Stack on Ubuntu / Debian / AlmaLinux VPS
If you're looking to host websites or web applications on your server, installing the LAMP stack is an essential step. LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL (or MariaDB), and PHP (or Perl/Python). This tutorial will guide you through the installation process for Ubuntu, Debian, and AlmaLinux.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- Access to your server or local machine with one of the following operating systems:
- Ubuntu (20.04 or later)
- Debian (10 or later)
- AlmaLinux (8 or later)
- A user account with sudo privileges.
- An active internet connection.
Step 1: Update Your System
Before installing any packages, it’s a good practice to update your package index. Run the following command:
For Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

sudo dnf update -y
Step 2: Install Apache Web Server

sudo dnf install httpd -y
After installation, start the Apache service and enable it to launch at boot:

Verify the installation by opening your web browser and navigating to http://your_server_ip. You should see the Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page or a similar confirmation page for AlmaLinux.
Step 3: Install MySQL / MariaDB
For database management, we will install either MySQL or MariaDB. MariaDB is a popular drop-in replacement for MySQL that is often recommended.
For MySQL on Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt install mysql-server -y
For MariaDB on AlmaLinux:
sudo dnf install mariadb-server -y
Once installed, start the service and enable it to run at boot:

sudo systemctl start mariadb # For AlmaLinux
sudo systemctl enable mysql # For Ubuntu/Debian

Secure your installation by running:
sudo mysql_secure_installation
Follow the on-screen prompts to set a root password and remove test databases, etc.
Step 4: Install PHP
Now, let’s install PHP, which is the programming language that will work alongside Apache and MySQL. You can also install additional PHP modules as needed.
For Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt install php libapache2-mod-php php-mysql -y
For AlmaLinux:
sudo dnf install php php-mysqlnd -y
To install additional PHP extensions, you can use:
sudo apt install php-<extension_name> -y # For Ubuntu/Debian
sudo dnf install php-<extension_name> -y # For AlmaLinux
Step 5: Test PHP
To verify that PHP is working with Apache, create a PHP info file:
echo "<?php phpinfo(); ?>" | sudo tee /var/www/html/info.php
Now, visit http://your_server_ip/info.php in your web browser. You should see the PHP information page. Remember to delete this file after testing for security purposes:
sudo rm /var/www/html/info.php
Step 6: Adjust Firewall Settings (if applicable)
If you have a firewall enabled, make sure to allow HTTP and HTTPS traffic:
For Ubuntu/Debian (using UFW):
sudo ufw allow 'Apache Full'
For AlmaLinux (using firewalld):
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-service=http --permanent
sudo firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-service=https --permanent
sudo firewall-cmd --reload
