How to Install GUI on AlmaLinux: A Step-by-Step Guide

AlmaLinux is a powerful CentOS fork designed for enterprise-level environments. While it offers a rich command-line interface, many users prefer the convenience of a graphical user interface (GUI). This guide will walk you through the steps to install a GUI on AlmaLinux, making it easier for you to manage your system and applications.

We recommend simply getting our Windows VPS which comes with default RDP.

Prerequisites

Before we begin, ensure you have:

  1. AlmaLinux installed on your machine.
  2. Root or sudo privileges to install packages.
  3. An internet connection to download necessary packages.

Step 1: Update Your System

It’s important to start with an updated system. Open your terminal and run the following command:

sudo dnf update -y

This command updates your system and ensures you have the latest packages installed.

Step 2: Install a Graphical Desktop Environment

AlmaLinux supports several desktop environments. Here are instructions for installing the two most popular ones: GNOME and Xfce.

Option A: Install GNOME Desktop Environment

  1. Run the following command to install the GNOME desktop environment:

  • sudo dnf group install "Server with GUI" -y
  • After the installation is complete, set the system to boot into the graphical target on startup:

    sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
  • Reboot your machine:

    sudo reboot

Option B: Install Xfce Desktop Environment

  1. If you prefer a lightweight environment like Xfce, install it with:

  • sudo dnf group install "Xfce" -y
  • Similarly, set the default target to graphical:

    sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
  • Reboot your machine:

  1. sudo reboot

Step 3: Verify the Installation

After your system reboots, you should be greeted by the graphical login screen. Choose your username, enter your password, and log in to your new desktop environment.

Step 4: Configure Your GUI (Optional)

Once logged in, you can customize your GUI environment according to your needs. You may want to:

  • Adjust display settings (resolution, orientation).
  • Change the wallpaper.
  • Add or remove applications from the taskbar.

Step 5: Install Additional Software (Optional)

You can use a package manager like dnf or GUI-based software managers such as GNOME Software to install additional applications.

For example:

sudo dnf install [package-name] -y

Replace [package-name] with the application you wish to install.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • If the GUI doesn’t start: Ensure that the graphical target is set correctly. You can check the default target with:

  • systemctl get-default
  • Switching to CLI: If you need to access the command line, you can switch to TTY by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F2 (or F3, F4, etc.).

Installing a GUI on AlmaLinux is relatively straightforward, whether you choose GNOME, Xfce, or another desktop environment. The graphical interface can make managing your system more user-friendly, especially for those who may not be comfortable using command-line tools. With this step-by-step guide, you should be well-equipped to configure your AlmaLinux machine to suit your needs. Enjoy your new graphical environment!
